The first Twitter prototype was built in two weeks in March 2006 and launched publicly in August of 2006. The service grew popular very quickly and it soon made sense for Twitter to move outside of Obvious. In May 2007, Twitter Incorporated was founded.
Twitter is a free social-networking and micro-blogging service (a form of multimedia blogging which allows users to send brief text updates or micromedia: pictures, etc., to be viewed by whomever). It enables its users to send and read other users’ updates known as “tweets”.
“Tweets” are text based posts of up to 140 characters which are displayed on the user’s profile and delivered to other users who are subscribed to them, known as “followers”. Senders have the ability to choose who is allowed/not allowed to access their “tweets”, or by default allow anyone to view them.
